The International
Inline Skating Association (IISA) is a non-profit trade
organization that works to advance the sport of inline
skating. The organization was founded in 1991 by a group of
manufacturers, retailers & skaters who chose to be pro-active
about enhancing the future of the sport. Since then, the
IISA has developed effective educational programs promoted
safe skating & protected & expanded access to public
skate ways across the country.
The IISA headquarters are located in America. In addition to
this office, a nationwide network of volunteers works with
local governments to maintain skate access & ensure good
civic relations through the Government
Relations & National
Skate Patrol (NSP) programs.
The IISA Instructor
Certification Program (ICP) is a professional teaching
program which qualifies people to become inline skating
instructors. The IISA/ICP is recognised worldwide as the
premier certification program for inline skating &
conducts programs in Great Britain, Canada, Europe, Japan
& Southeast Asia.
The
IISA is governed by a 15 member board of directors & an 8
person executive committee. The board meets 3 times a year -
in January for the annual meeting, in July at the National
Sporting Goods Association World Sports Expo in Chicago &
at a autumn planning meeting. The executive committee
teleconference once a month. The IISA also has several
standing committees that meet regularly.

The IISA Government
Relations Program
|
- The
IISA Government Relations Program (GRP) works to maintain access to
public thoroughfares for all inline skaters by monitoring legislation,
drafting sample laws & stepping in to assist communities which are
facing proposed skate bans or other restrictions. Since 1991, the GRP
has defended the right to skate in more than three dozen skating
venues, including Central Park, New York City; Venice Beach,
California & Palm Beach, Florida. While Government Relations
activities are directed from the IISA National Office just outside of
Washington, DC, the essence of the GRP's success has been its network
of over 1,000 volunteers. By attending town meetings, rallying local
support, and providing community service through local National Skate
Patrol chapters, fund raising events and citizens watch groups on
skates, these volunteers have demonstrated to their legislators that
inline skaters are a boon to the community & have as much a right
to the road as cyclists & pedestrians.
The GRP is here to help in the
event of anti-skate legislation by offering advice, written materials
& testimony to head off or overturn skate bans, but why wait until
there is a problem? Prevention, in the form of projecting a positive
image of inline skating, is the best way to ensure that we skaters will
protect our right to the roads.
If your community is experiencing
a problem with inline skate access, or you would like more information
on how to form a club, organize an event or start your own NSP chapter,
contact the IISA National Office.
