The IISA was founded in 1991 by a group of manufacturers, retailers & skaters who chose to be proactive about enhancing the future of the sport. Since then, the IISA has developed effective educational programs, promoted safe skating & protected & expanded access to public skate ways across the country.

In 1995, Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Chairperson Ann Brown awarded the first ever Chairman's Safety Award to a non-profit association. This was presented in recognition of the IISA's commitment to safety & for programs pursuant to the cause of safety.

The International Inline Skating Association (IISA) is a non-profit organization whose purpose is:

  • to promote inline skating as a recreational activity, a form of transportation, a health & fitness training activity & a competitive sport;
  • to develop inline safety & education programs;
  • to protect the right-to-skate & expand public skate ways.

The Gear Up! Program
The IISA Gear Up! Program is a nationwide, public service inline skating safety program that strives to ensure that inline skating remains a fun & safe activity for skaters of all levels through attention to the three components of safe inline skating:

  • Proper equipment, including quality, well-maintained inline skates, helmet, wrist protection, knee & elbow pads
  • Skill development, including a program of qualified instruction
  • Using common sense by skating in a safe environment, always skating under control & remembering the IISA Rules Of The Road (See Below)

The Instructor Certification Program (ICP)
The ICP has been qualifying professional inline skating instructors since 1991. Through qualified instructors, the ICP provides a standardized course incorporating the safest, most effective skill-building methods available to skaters of all levels around the world.

National Skate Patrol (NSP)
Active all across North America, NSP volunteers are dedicated to providing assistance to users of designated skating areas by

  • Distributing inline safety & education information to skaters.
  • Making skaters aware of park etiquette & ordinances.
  • Communicating with the local authorities regarding injuries.
  • Providing on-site stopping instruction to anyone requesting assistance or in obvious need of assistance.
  • Promoting the safe use of areas by all participants.

Government Relations Program

But what good would these other IISA programs be if there were no place to skate? The IISA GRP presents & protects environments where skating can be safely practiced. Since 1991, the GRP has successfully defended skating venues in more than three dozen locations, including Central Park, New York City; Venice Beach, California & London plus Ontario in Canada.
