The initial course is pitched at NVQ level 2. It takes place over two days with a six week break to prepare for the examination. It entitles instructors to teach beginning skills to individuals or small groups. The skills are:

Balancing

Falling

Stopping

Basic forward movement (striding)

Basic turning (A-Frame turn)

Basic street awareness

Swizzles

U turns

Instructors will also learn basic marketing & accountancy skills, the implications of the Health & Safety at work act & how to structure children's lessons effectively. The minimum age limit is 17 years, but consideration will be given to 16 year olds who can supply the appropriate evidence of teaching ability. The Senior instructor course is pitched at NVQ level 3 & will enable instructors to teach intermediate skills such as:

Intermediate striding

Forward Crossovers

Spin stop & T-stop

Parallel turn & slalom

Basic backwards movement

Forward to backward transitions

Powerslides

Instructors will also gain an insight into the most effective way to teach larger groups & how to set up a skate school. Instructors are assessed in the following:

Theory & product knowledge

Skating Skills

Teaching ability

Oral question & answer session

Once the initial qualification is reached, instructors are then required to keep the qualification current by gaining Continuing Education Points (CEPs). These can be achieved by various methods, such as (1) attending further training "add-on" modules, (2) attending a skating event in a volunteer capacity; (3) setting up a skating initiative in your own area (4) attending annual instructor "updates" etc.

Skate Patrol

The skate patrol course is designed for the entry level instructor. Upon successful completion the skate patroller will be able to teach inline skating basics (balancing, falling, stopping & road sense). They can also assist Skating instructors at community sessions or with larger group skates. The age limit is 14 years.
