Basic Spins

Flat Spin (easiest)

Begin at a snails pace, feet shoulder width apart evenly weighted. Initiate the spin by smoothly twisting the upper torso in the desired spin direction. as the upper torso follows the lower torso the twisting upper torso you should execute a 180 degree to 360 degree spin. Keep in mind that this is a gentle finesse move...If you add too much upper torso twist abruptly you will torque yourself right off your feet! Until you have got it wired, slow & smooth is the key. Add speed and power to the spin by adding both forward momentum & upper body torque. As you get proficient, notice how your body naturally moves to a heel/toe foot weighting style: the forward-moving (outside) skate becomes the pivot point & the backward-moving (inside skate merely provides stability as you spin).

Setup                  Spin         Follow Through        Plant Feet

1: Raise the heel of the backward moving sweep skate, then shift your weight to pivot skate & turn your body into spin cycle
2: Weight the heel of the pivot skate & spin around 180 degrees using a 'sweep' skate for better balance
3: Centre your weight on the pivot skate & bring down the heel of the 'sweep' skate

4: Re-weight both skates 50/50 & shift pressure onto balls of both feet
